William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) made his first lecture tour in the United States from late 1852 into 1853. While in New York City, he is known to have had a photograph made at Jeremiah Gurney’s Daguerrean Saloon located at 349 Broadway. Whether this small plate is by Gurney is doubtful. The daguerreotype was later engraved by H. Davidson and published in The Century Magazine (see below).
